SOURCE ENGINE

M E T A L . G E A R . R E M A K E

Metal Gear Remake is an amateur project developed by Outer Heaven. The objective was to create a remake of the first Metal Gear released on MSX in 1987. Within a team of developers located around the world, my mission was to bring up to date a map of the MSX version to using the Valve Hammer engine.

Supported by Konami UK, the project was unfortunately cancelled by Konami Japan for law issues.

My work was to convert the Build 2 Floor 1 level with Source editor. At the first, we had to think how adapt gameplay features and how adapts situations with more challenges and more intensity.

I preferred to do not take only the architecture and transpose it in 3D because the structure of games from 80’s is not adapted for now. But I think that the deep of the game is totally current. So, the exercise it was to keep the functional but change the form. Of course we have to keep the original walkthrough to be more respectful of the original game.

We built maps through the MGS 3 Snake Eater game system. So this choice adds new challenges, and new vision relative of original MG. Excepted gadgets and objects, MG purposed only the movement and the fight. But with MG3 game system, we have to add more parameters as first person view, crawl, cover, climbing, etc… So I allowed myself to add parameters in function of this new feature in keeping the original spirit and situations of original.

Here some example of rooms, to see difference between MSX version and Source version:
